Book review: 'Doggy Defenders: Stella the Search Dog' is a unique way to learn about safety

Ever since I read and reviewed the book Bloodhound in Blue I've been fascinated with search and rescue dogs. I was impressed with how much information National Geographic Kids was able to pack in its latest installment of the Doggy Defenders series, Stella the Search Dog. So far, I think this book is my favorite in the series.

Stella is a Bloodhound who lives with her partner, trooper Enzo Diaz. In this book, Stella and Trooper Diaz get a call that a hiker is lost. They board a helicopter and zoom off into the mountains to search for the lost hiker before a storm rolls in.

After she sniffs a bandana, Stella zooms through the trees, a stream, and logs to find the lost hiker. The hiker thanks her and everyone is happy.

This book was a fun and read and I think it would be exciting for kids. After seeing that even adults get lost, I particularly appreciated "Stella's Safety Tips" in the back of the book. Seeing Stella in action really helped emphasize that those tips are actually important.

Stella the Search Dog has nothing offensive in it.
