I started bedtime by reading this book, meaning to go on to others once we'd finished, "The Diggers." But to my surprise, both my girls begged me to read this one again. There was something about how this story was told that made all of us want to continue in its pages.
Starting off by showing animals digging through the dirt, this book quickly moves to a digging machine tunneling through the earth to build a train tunnel. While the words tell a simple story, the illustrations were what blew all of us away. Illustrator, Antoine Corbineau did a wonderful job with this picture book and I hope to come across more of his work.
My little girls kept creeping closer to me as we read this book, and I loved seeing their enjoyment as we read about a pirate, a worm, and even a dog digging all across the earth.
"The Diggers" is a great picture book for children and contains nothing offensive.
Although she lived only 42 years, author Margaret Wise Brown continues to leave her legacy in children's fiction. A native of France, Corbineau has illustrated a wide variety of publications.
