Picture book review: 'My Israel and Me' is a phenomenal book that introduces children to the diversity of Israel

My 2022 plan is to have an intense study of the Old Testament. So, when the opportunity came to review this book I thought it would be a great way to start off my studies. And it was. My Israel and Me, while geared toward children, taught me a lot and I now want to learn more.

This picture book has fabulous illustrations that greatly enhance its words and help readers picture what is being talked about. The illustrations are all color and show things like technology, the desert, Muslims, Jews, and many other people and things found throughout Israel.

I learned a lot by reading this book. In fact, I learned so much that I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much I didn't know before. I knew Israel was a high-tech country, but I didn't realize how much. I knew Israel was mostly a desert, but I had no idea how much they've done to make their country a green paradise. I could add to this list, but I don't want to give too much away!

Israel is home to refugees, Bedouins, Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Their citizens are proud, and I can see why, of all the freedoms they enjoy.

In this day of profit-focus and commercialization, many of the stores in Jerusalem close from Friday evening until Saturday evening, giving time for families to relax and spend time with each other. I didn't realize Jews also don't drive on their Shabbat, something that sounds very relaxing and wonderful to me (5 kids means I'm forever driving to different activities).

After reading My Israel and Me I want to learn even more about this fascinating country and the people in it. This clean picture book is a wonderful way to whet anyone's appetite of learning about Israel and all its cultures.
