Picture book review: 'This Book is Not a Bedtime Story' is a fun readaloud for kids

When I was a child, one of my favorite books my dad read to us was The Monster at the End of this Book. I remember laughing and giggling long after he'd finished reading it; I thought it was so funny. There was something about This Book is Not a Bedtime Story that brought back the nostalgia of having that book read to me long ago and made reading it to my own kids a delight.

This Book is Not a Bedtime Story is about a small, rather cuddly monster, named Fluffy 'Terror' McFluff, who wants to be big and scary. So he takes all his friends, and the reader, along to different supposedly scary locations to attempt to scare them. The only problem is that his friends see right through him and keep suggesting that he's actually getting tired.

The illustrations in this book are simple, yet eye-catching to children. My kids, ages four through ten, loved having me read this book and it kept their attention the entire time.

I enjoyed how Fluffy speaks in rhyme, but all his friends talk in prose. In the end, Fluffy finally gives in to the temptation of sleep and the reader realizes that nothing he talked about was actually scary.

This book was a fun one, with nothing offensive, or actually scary, in it.
