Book review: 'Pounce! A How to Speak Cat Training Guide' teaches that cats can be trained

Did you know you can train a cat?

I didn't. I mean, I knew tigers and lions have been trained for the circus. But the common house cat? No way. At least, that's what I thought.

I was wrong!

I'm wrong sometimes. Go figure.

National Geographic Kids' latest book, Pounce! A How to Speak Cat Training Guide blew me away with all the stuff I learned about training cats.

That's right. Cats can be trained! Who knew!?

This book is divided into six sections. The first section helps readers understand that, yes, cats can actually be trained. The second explains how to understand your cat and how to read their body language. That one kinda surprised me. I had no idea cats had readable body language.

The third, fourth, and fifth sections hold the meat of cat training. The basics, such as using the litter box and wearing a collar, to jumping from chair to chair and ringing a bell are all here. In all, I counted about 25 tricks readers can teach their cats.

The last two sections help readers un-train cats from destructive and harmful habits they may have gotten into and also teach about the history of cats.

Basically, Pounce! is full of something just about any cat-lover can learn from.
