Of course, as soon as I propped this book up on the fireplace mantel, my kids swarmed to it. Who wouldn't, with a title like Ick! and a nasty looking spider on the cover!
Ick! talks about cockroaches, tortoises, parrotfish, dung beetles, assassin bugs, and 35 other living things. Each animal/insect/reptile/living creature has two pages dedicated to it and its info. Readers will learn things like where these creatures got their names, something gross/cool (I guess it all depends on your opinion!), where it lives, its size, and all kids of other neat facts.
For instance, did you know that after a female desert tortoise lays her eggs she pees on the pile? Eew, gross! But there's a very strategic reason behind why she pees on them. Wanna know? Of course you do! The smell of per urine stops egg-eating animals from finding her soon-to-be children. Pretty neat, right?
One of my favorite chapters was about sand tiger sharks. The siblings fight to the death and then EAT EACH OTHER. Once there are only two survivors left, they swim off in different directions to begin their lives. Gulp. What!? Yep, it's totally true!
Ick! is a fantastic book that makes learning science fun. It is full of full-color amazing photographs, several of them close-ups of tiny insects, and is an easy read. At 112 pages with short chapters, this book is an easy one to pick up at any time, but it can be difficult to put down.
Book breakdown:
11 pages
Best for ages: 8 and older
Educational factor: lots!
Parents should be concerned about: Like it name suggests, this book isn't for the squeamish. It talks about mating, fighting, and death within the animal kingdom. But things don't get gory or off-color.
