Book review: 'To Burp or Not to Burp' is a fun compilation of what happens to bodily functions in space

When I was told about, "To Burp or Not to Burp: A Guide to Your Body is Space," I knew I wanted the book in my home. I have a space-fanatic child who I thought would get a kick out of it.

But I was really surprised to find that I enjoyed reading it as well!

It seems like most people focus on the weightless wonder of astronaut life. While floating around seems fun, this book goes into depth regarding how space travelers take care of basic needs like going to the bathroom, picking their noses (in space, picking is preferable over blowing!), and passing gas.

I used to think astronauts exercised so much (two hours a day) because they were vain/body builders. But now I realize it's because their bones could deteriorate without motion. But I never realized how tricky exercising in space is. Because water droplets float around, sweat needs to be contained and the astronauts have to wear special clothes to wick up the sweat.

These facts, and many more, make this book a colossal read for both children and adults. Personally, I've never been a huge space-fact connoisseur, but this book interested even me.

This book was fun to read and can keep up with all kinds of attention spans. Subjects are covered in one to two pages and are complete with full color art work and photographs. This book is a clean read with nothing offensive in it.

An astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency, author Dave Williams lives with his family in Saskatchewan, Canada. Loredana Cunti has worked in numerous entertainment professions; she enjoys spending time with her children in Canada.
